Fall for Chenin Blanc

Paumanok Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is a varietal native to Loire Valley in France.  One of the more familiar regions being Vouvray.  California and South Africa (where it is called Steen) also produce quite a bit of this varietal.  But I was pleased and excited to see Paumanok Vineyards on my beloved Long Island is producing a lively and crisp Chenin Blanc.   They are currently the only one’s producing this varietal and doing it quite well.

Paumanok’s is fresh with high acidity and has notes of honey and grapefruit.  There are some floral and spice notes as well that round out the fruit. I think typically most would assume this would be a great summer wine but because of the honey and spice this is a fall wine for me.  It’s a special and more interesting varietal for this region so I want to share this with some friends with a fall themed dinner.
